Extra Breaking News: Coming Full Circle Are Life’s Little Rewards!

Coming Full Circle is defined as landing in the original place, source, or circumstance through a cycle of developments.

The summer after I graduated from high school, I took a part-time job working for the advertising department in my hometown’s newspaper. It helped that I had connections since it’s where my mom had worked for like a hundred years. Okay, I’m exaggerating here, but for as long as I can remember growing up in this small town, my mom worked for the local newspaper as an advertising sales rep.

I remember many days walking to her office after school from the nearby high school to either hang out until she could give me a ride home or, hopefully, convince her I needed money to buy a new pair of shoes at the downtown Tradehome Shoes. Of course, a teenager must have the latest style.

I enjoyed visiting the bustling newspaper headquarters and, in particular, the advertising department. I liked listening to the chitchat and watching the cast of characters as they buzzed in a hive of creative energy.

These guys were not the real cast of characters, but the crafty nose for news scene was similar. 😉

Lucky for me, I ended up being part of the hive at a young and tender age of 18. It was my job to do the ad layout, which was sort of a template for the printing press crew to follow. I’d paste the prepared clip art ads I’d get from the salespeople and stick them on a mock-up newspaper layout for page placement.

This crucial and compelling job involved a pair of scissors, glue and the keen eye for configuring an odd-lot of shapes on grid paper. That’s right, this was before computers and fancy design software y’all!!

Impressive...huh?!?!

It was impressive to me as this was my first real stab at an office job. It was exciting to be part of the buzzing hive working towards a finished product we could see printed at the end of the day.

As you can see, the crowds went wild once it hit the streets! 😂

Seriously though...

Recently, this experience and those fond memories came full circle for me when I had the opportunity to submit a short fiction writing piece to this same local newspaper. It’s now thirty-some years later and the newspaper has, undoubtedly, evolved with the times and they now publish a special edition magazine featuring local events, people, arts and literary prose.

Who knew back when I was hovered over a desk cutting and gluing my way to professional greatness I'd one day be writing stories with my own cast of characters that would end up printed in this same hometown publication.

Truly, this is a fun full circle moment that makes me wonder… what would have happened if I hadn’t packed up the glue and hung up the scissors when I did?

Hmmm...

Click on the link below to my short fiction story printed in the July-August edition of the Austin Living Magazine. I hope the story brings back "classic" memories of summer days in your own hometown.

The online story is on pg 44-45 and titled –

What full circle moment have you experienced?

“You just stay the course, and do what it is that you do, and grow while you're doing it. Eventually, it will either come full circle or at least you'll go to bed at night happy.”  ~Jon Bon Jovi
