Why Deer Hunting is Similar to Grocery Shopping

It's interesting the rituals my hubby and son go through just to prepare for bow hunting season. I'm not a deer hunter, but there are definitely some women that enjoy the sport. It's not just for men anymore. Many couples even hunt together. That’s cool if it’s an interest they both have.  For Mister O and my son, deer hunting season is all about prepping for the hunt, guy bonding time and, of course, the pursuit of the big Buck.

I, on the other hand, wouldn't be good at it. I hate to be cold. I hate to be wet. I’d hate to be sitting in a tree and I’d hate to kill a deer.

However, from my point of view, you might compare Deer Hunting to Grocery Shopping. It's truly a sport with amazing similarities.  The comparisons are uncanny. Check it out.

If your favorite store is Cabela's and you shop styled in camo pants and boots...then you might be a deer hunter.
  • If your favorite store is Trader Joe’s and you shop styled in comfy pants and tennis shoes...then you might be a grocery shopper.

If you spray no scent on your camo clothes and hang them outside the night before...then you might be a deer hunter.
  • If you save cents by clipping coupons and stack them in a pile the night before...then you might be a grocery shopper.

If you get up early without a shower just to prowl through the woods...you might be a deer hunter.
  • If you get up early without a shower just to shop before the crowded chaos...then you might be a grocery shopper.

If you lurk in trees and like the smell of the outdoors...then you might be a deer hunter.
  • If you lurk in the produce section and like the smell of the fruit...then you might be a grocery shopper.

If your toes stiffen up because its cold and windy...then you might be a deer hunter.
  • If your nipples stiffen up because its cold in the freezer section...then you might be a grocery shopper.

If your hunting knife fell out of your bag 10 ft back...then you might be a deer hunter.
  • If your bag of potatoes fell off the cart in the parking lot...then you might be a grocery shopper.

If you bitch about loading the hunting gear in your truck in the pouring rain...then you might be a deer hunter.
  • If you bitch about loading the grocery bags in your car in the pouring rain...then you might be a grocery shopper.

If you get in the truck and cuss because you didn't get a deer, but soon after spotted a buck on the road when driving down the highway...then you might NOT be a deer hunter.
  • If you get in the checkout line and cuss because you forgot your coupons, but soon after spotted a lady that saved 42 bucks with hers…then you might NOT be a grocery shopper.

In the above scenerio, the profound difference between deer hunting and grocery shopping is that, at least, I came home with something to eat!!!

I guess that makes me a grocery shopper!  So, what are you, a deer hunter or a grocery shopper?

For all you deer hunters and grocery shoppers,
you'll get a kick out of this funny hunting song.

Put your smile on,
Laurie O

  1. I am a grocery shopper. I do stalk the weekly ads and have been known to apply my sport at different locations that I heard the bargains were gathering!

  2. Very funny! That song could be the W Va anthem this time of year. Camo isn't a good color for me so I don't hunt but I will eat the stuff if hubby brings it home.

    1. I think the song is hilarious! My hubby still hasn't brought a deer home to eat. I guess that's probably why I thought the song was funny. Glad you enjoyed and that you stopped on over for a visit.

  4. I am a grocery shopper, but not a very good one since I don't sniff out bargains or coupons very well. I've never gone hunting in my life since I'm an indoor sort. I love deer meat though! I'm hoping my brother gets one this year since he has enough hunting motivation for our whole family!

    1. Hi Molly! I'm not a very good bargain hunter either. I'm usually the one that has forgotten the coupons at home. Hope you get the chance for some venison this year. Thanks for your comments. :)
